Esophageal achalasia is a rare neurodegenerative esophageal disorder characterized by a continous constriction of the muscles of the esophage leading to difficulty in swallowing, regurgitation and chest pain.

The ECRIN network (European Clinical Research Infrastructure network) supports the transnational access to several European Union countries of a running study comparing a new scarless endosurgical intervention with standard laparoscopic surgery.

This study is run from the Department of Interdisciplinary Endoscopy, University Hamburg-Eppendorf by Prof. Dr. Thomas Rösch, coordinating investigator for this international study taking place in about 17 centres across Europe and America (Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Czech Republic, Canada & USA).

The CIEC partner of the ECRIN network is in charge of the monitoring of the Belgian site UZ Leuven
