Dr. Daniel Witte trained as a medical doctor and clinical epidemiologist at the University of Utrecht has been recently appointed as Principal Investigator of the Luxembourg Cohort conducted by the Centre for Health Studies of CRP-Santé, in collaboration with the Minister of Health, the Minister of Research, the University of Luxembourg, the Integrated Biobank of Luxembourg, other Public Research Centers, clinicians and researchers. This cohort will become a research infrastructure for both biomedical and public health research in Luxembourg gathering a large number of participants of all ages and nationalities living in the Grand Duchy, assessing their exposure to risk factors and following the development of their health during at least the next decade.
Luxembourgish physicians can participate in different ways and at different stages of Cohort Luxembourg:
1. In the planning phase, physicians are invited to assist in the cohort development within the areas of their specialty.
2. When the cohort is established and being followed, physicians can help by staying informed and answering questions their patients might have concerning their participation or laboratory results they received. Throughout the duration of the study, it will be even more possible to get involved for example by suggesting more detailed studies in specific sub-populations within the cohort.
3. Finally, when the first data and the results are available, physicians can use these references to estimate the development of risk factors and the prevalence and incidence of diseases they treat. In the future, the cohort will be useful for the implementation of new treatments or prevention practices.
